Introduction

Imagine a concert hall. The stage is set, the lights are bright, and the crowd is buzzing. The musicians are ready to give their performance.

Then the power cuts. The lights go dark, the sound fades, and the room falls silent.

That’s what technical SEO is about. Invisible, boring, not relevant to any visitors and people noticed it only when it breaks (and often costs you a lot).

Today, we are diving in the world of Tech SEO for Webflow. we’ll explore:

  • What is Tech-SEO?
  • Why technical SEO matters more AND less than you think
  • How Webflow performs on technical SEO?
  • What is the future of Tech SEO/AEO?

We’ll also address some common pain points:

  • Why technical audits often flag hundreds of errors but don’t move rankings?
  • Whether Webflow is “good for SEO” or not?
  • Why spending your time optimizing for Lighthouse is SEO irrelevant?

Let’s get into it.

1. What is Technical SEO?

Technical SEO is the stuff no one notices but everything depends on. It’s the power running behind the stage, the cables under the floor, the systems that make the music possible.

Tech SEO allows your content to flow through the web, become discoverable, crawlable, and indexable by search engines. In fine, to be found by your potential customers.

Solid technical SEO = consistent, stable impressions.

“The job of technical SEO isn’t to impress users. It’s to create the conditions that allow the rest of your SEO to work.” Sofian Bettayeb

Tech SEO isn’t about squeezing out a few milliseconds of load time. Tech SEO is about making sure your content can be found in the first place.

Press enter or click to view image in full sizeLighthouse score isn’t tech SEO, just a small part of it?

The Tech SEO scope can be drawn to the following terms. Don’t worry, they aren’t as scary as they sound.

  • Crawlability: How easily search engines can access and navigate a website’s pages
  • Robots.txt: A file that tells search engines which parts of a website they are allowed or not allowed to crawl.
  • Indexing: How search engines store and organize web pages so they can appear in search results.
  • Sitemaps: Files that list all important pages on a website to help search engines find and index them more efficiently.
  • Site architecture: The structure and organization of a website’s pages and links that help users and search engines find content.
  • Canonical tags: HTML tags that tell search engines which version of a page is the main one to avoid duplicate content issues.
  • Redirects: Instructions that automatically send users and search engines from one URL to another.
  • Schema: Structured data added to a webpage that helps search engines understand its content and display rich results in search.
  • Website speed: How fast your website renders the content to the user.

Too often, we reduce tech SEO to buzzwords like Core Web Vitals (performance) or schema markup.

3. Why technical SEO matter more than people think?

In a concert, you don’t care about electricity until the moment the power cuts out.

Same with SEO. One misplaced “noindex” tag, one redirect error, one overly aggressive robots.txt rule, and suddenly your best content vanishes from Google.

“I once made a typo on a canonical tag for my website. I lost months of impressions and traffic for one small mistake. Sofian Bettayeb

One tiny mistake and you feel it almost right away. You lose traffic, leads, revenue.

Tech SEO problems often sit silently in the background. But their cost can be massive and long-term.

Fortunately, Google made a gift to all website owners: Google Search Console.

Think of it as the control room of the concert. It doesn’t perform the music, but it reveals which lights are off, which cables are loose, and where the sound is failing.

Google Search Console (or Bing Webmaster) is a free tool that lets you see how Google views your website. It tells you which pages are indexed, which ones are blocked, and where your crawl errors, mobile issues, or structured data problems hide.

4. Why technical SEO matters less than people think

You can have perfect sound and flawless lighting. But if the band is bad, no one shows up.
Same for tech SEO.

“Tech SEO won’t increase your leads. But it creates the conditions for all your other SEO efforts (content and backlink) to work” Sofian Bettayeb

Press enter or click to view image in full size

I see a lot of Webflow designers / Developers overinvesting in Tech SEO and Ignoring the rest. Of course they don’t get any results. Sofian Bettayeb

A perfect Lighthouse score won’t make your website rank first on Google (whatever that means).

In order to make your content rank, you need mix of:

  • Content and keywords: Search engines rank pages that best match what people are actually searching for.
  • Helpful content: Google rewards pages that satisfy users, not just algorithms. When content answers questions clearly, keeps readers engaged, and provides value, it sends positive behavioral signals (like longer visits and fewer bounces), which help it climb higher
  • Backlinks: Links from other trusted websites act as votes of confidence and authority.

Technical SEO clears the path. It doesn’t create demand, authority or meaning. This is why only doing “Tech SEO” won’t have any business impact, even if it’s done perfectly.

I believe platforms like Webflow also have their responsibility, they communicate every SEO feature like it will “do SEO” when it merely touches a small aspect of it. Sofian Bettayeb

Now, a personal message to you, Webflow devs and designers.

If you’re just optimizing a website using Webflow’s SEO settings, you’re not doing SEO. You’re only handling a small slice of technical SEO.

Telling your clients that “Webflow will improve their SEO” is like saying buying a gym membership will get you fit. It gives you the tools, sure, but it doesn’t do the work for you.

Most Webflow sites don’t need complex SEO setups. For high-stakes platforms like ecommerce giants or media sites with millions of pages, yes, every technical improvement compounds.
But for Webflow typical sites, B2B SaaS companies, or small SMEs sites, basic Tech SEO is enough.

5. Technical SEO in Webflow is easy

“For 99% of Webflow users, technical SEO isn’t the problem. But most SEO experts keep obsessing over the 1% of cases none of them are dealing with.” Sofian BETTAYEB

Webflow is great for most websites. Of course, if you are a news publisher or a e-commerce giant, Webflow won’t be enough, and that’s OK.
(And if you even have a small e-commerce, you probably already realised Webflow wasn’t for you 😏)

Here’s how I personally set the Webflow SEO settings for technical SEO.

Robots.txt on Webflow

Robots.txt tells search engines which parts of a website they are allowed or not allowed to crawl.

Settings → SEO → Indexing

Recommendations:

Press enter or click to view image in full sizeRobots.txt and agents setting on Webflow
  1. Disabling sub domain indexing to avoid to have your “staging” or “webflow.io” site on Google
  2. Robots.txt: Use a simple rule that says, “ Accept all bots and allow all pages.”
  3. Enable “Search engine crawlers” and “AI Bots” to make sure your content is accessible on Answer Engines (like chatGPT).
  4. Turn off to keep your sitemap on the Robots.txt file

By following those, your Robots.txt file will look something like this.

Sitemap.txt on Webflow

Sitemap.txt list all important pages on a website to help search engines find and index them more efficiently.

Settings → SEO → Sitemap

Press enter or click to view image in full sizeSitemap auto generated on Webflow

Recommendations:

  1. Enable “Auto-generated Sitemap” and never think about sitemap ever.
  2. Submit your sitemap on Google search Console

Structured data (Schema)

Schema is often overhyped, but becomes important again with AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) on the rise.

Recommendations

Use the Free Webflow SEO app AI SEO Copilot for adding specific AEO and SEO schema.

Or simply use the AI Schema generation from Webflow. Be aware of the current limitations.

Page Settings → Schema Markup → Generate Schema

Accessibility

Webflow makes it easy to follow best practices. The problem is that many designers skip it. Accessibility supports both users and SEO.

There are links between Tech SEO and Accessibility, but the impact is relatively small. I won’t recommend investing in Accessibility for SEO purposes. I will recommend investing in Accessibility for your users’ purpose. Webflow has an amazing ressource to get you started.

Page performance

Webflow does a lot under the hood. But layout shifts, LCP, custom scripts, and unused CSS still require attention. (Remember, we don’t care about 100 Performance score).

We are planing a full article to cover all the topic regarding Webflow performance.

Recommendations:

Canonical tags

Webflow nails this. Simple, powerful, and essential.

Settings → SEO → Global canonical tag URL

Press enter or click to view image in full size

All site pages will use this global canonical tag URL as their starting point and append the page’s unique URL slug after it. Webflow

It means that all your pages will be considered as unique and you don’t need to worry about duplicates.

Recommendations:

Just insert your main URL. Don’t do any typo 🤗

Redirects

Built-in and easy. But be careful with large migrations, since mistakes here can cost you.

Settings → Publishing → 301 Redirects

Press enter or click to view image in full size301 redirect for Webflow

Recommendations:

404 are bad for users and SEO. You need to monitor your website for internal (easy) and external (harder) 404.

2 ways to avoid 404:

  • Google Search Console: For URL only accessible externally (a link to a page you shared a long time ago), use Google Search Console Page indexing → Not found (404) and update your 301 redirects file.

Site structure

All pages should be reachable within four clicks (depth). Otherwise, lazy Google bots might never find them.

The goal for your website is to keep all you page to max 3 links from your Home page. Google bots are lazy; they don’t care enough to go further.

Recommendations:

Internal linking

See how pages connect, identify link clusters, and find opportunities to improve site navigation.

Internal linking is where SEO compounds. If you don’t link your pages, Google will assume they are not relevant to one another. Sofian Bettayeb

Use the free Sitemap & Website diagram generator to get the website internal linking overview, spot orphan page and finding new linking opportunities.

For most marketing websites, Webflow handles 90% percent of the tech SEO natively. You just need to not mess it up the last 10%. Sofian BETTAYEB

LLMs.txt file

LLMs. file helps control how AI models and language learning models interact with your site

Recommendations:

  1. Generate the LLMs.txt for Free with the Sitemap to LLMs.txt converter.
  2. Upload the file to Webflow Settings → SEO → LLMs.txt

7. Webflow and the future of SEO: AEO

As AI and LLMs (Large Language Models) become the layer between users and information, the new goal is to make your content accessible to machines that reason, not just index.

Press enter or click to view image in full size

AEO depends on technical SEO more than ever.

To surface your content in AI-generated answers, machines need to clearly understand what your content is about, where it lives, and how it connects.

That clarity comes from solid technical architecture: clean structure, clear signals, and well-defined ownership. Here are 4 important signals that will define the next wave of SEO, especially within the lens of AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) for Webflow:

A. Embedding-based relevance

Technical SEO makes your site easier for AI systems to understand by using clear structure, clean HTML, and descriptive tags. This helps LLMs connect your content to meaning, not just keywords, so your pages appear in more relevant AI-driven results.

B. Visibility in RAG indexes

Good technical SEO ensures your content is crawlable, indexable, and properly mapped through sitemaps and schema. That increases the chance your pages will be included in retrieval systems that power AI-generated answers.

C. Semantic depth and originality

Technical SEO supports depth by giving your content a strong and logical foundation with clean URLs, proper markup, and internal linking. This helps search engines and AI interpret your ideas correctly and recognize their uniqueness.

I covered the 7 concepts to understand when considering AEO in the article.

Conclusions

Technical SEO is invisible when it works. Infuriating when it doesn’t.

  • It’s essential infrastructure for your Website to be indexed on Google.
  • One small mistake can quietly ruin your traffic.
  • Nobody care about your Tech SEO except you and Google.
  • Webflow is great for technical SEO. It will cover more than you will need in 99% of the case
  • Don’t over complicate it.
Start writing content people love if you want to rank.

FAQs

Find answers to your most pressing questions about our AI SEO Copilot services.

What is technical SEO and why does it matter for Webflow sites?

Technical SEO is the foundational infrastructure that enables search engines to crawl, index, and understand your website. It includes elements like robots.txt, sitemaps, schema markup, page speed, and canonical tags. For Webflow sites, it matters because even great content won't rank if Google can't properly access and interpret your pages.

Does Webflow handle technical SEO automatically?

Yes, Webflow handles approximately 99% of technical SEO requirements natively. This includes auto-generated sitemaps, clean HTML output, SSL certificates, and fast hosting. However, you still need to configure robots.txt settings, submit your sitemap to Google Search Console, and manage redirects during site migrations.

What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and how does it differ from traditional SEO?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) focuses on optimizing content for AI systems like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews, rather than just traditional search rankings. While SEO targets search engine indexing, AEO prioritizes machine comprehension through clear structure, clean HTML, semantic depth, and visibility in RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) indexes.

How do I optimize my Webflow site for both SEO and AEO?

To optimize for both, focus on: clean site architecture (pages within 3 clicks of homepage), strategic internal linking, proper schema markup, fast page performance, and an LLMs.txt file for AI crawlers. Webflow's native features handle most technical requirements, but adding structured data and maintaining clear content hierarchy helps both search engines and AI systems understand your content.

Will fixing technical SEO issues guarantee higher rankings?

No, technical SEO alone won't guarantee rankings. It creates the conditions for your other SEO efforts to work, but ranking success still requires quality content aligned with user intent, helpful information, and authoritative backlinks. A perfect Lighthouse score means nothing without valuable content that people want to read and share.
