Why .com is still the only domain extension worth starting with

Low effort
High impact

Domain extensions get debated a lot. .io, .co, .ai, .net — they're all technically valid. But .com is still the one people type by default, trust instinctively, and remember without thinking.

If the .com for your name is taken, the answer isn't to use a different extension. It's to find a different name. A .com with a slightly different name beats a .net with your first choice every time.

How to do it?
Why .com still wins
  • Memory: When someone hears your domain name, they default to .com. If you're on .net, they'll land on your competitor's .com first.
  • Trust: Users and email filters are more likely to trust a .com address. It signals an established, serious operation.
  • SEO: Google doesn't officially rank .com higher, but the indirect effects are real — more clicks from people who recognize and trust the extension, fewer bounces from confused visitors.
What to do if your .com is taken
  1. Try variations of the name — add a word, remove a word, change the order
  2. Check if the current owner is using it or just parking it. Parked domains can sometimes be purchased directly.
  3. Don't add numbers or hyphens to make it work — that creates a different set of problems
  4. Once you have a name with an available .com, register it immediately at Cloudflare Registrar — at-cost pricing, no markup
Country-specific extensions

If your business genuinely serves one country, a country-code extension like .ch (Switzerland) or .de (Germany) can work well and sometimes helps with local search rankings. But use it in addition to a .com, not instead of one.

Do's
  • ✅ Always check .com availability first, before you fall in love with a name.
  • ✅ If you already have a non-.com domain and the .com becomes available, buy it and redirect it to your main site.
  • ✅ Register your domain for multiple years. It's a minor trust signal for Google and protects you from accidentally losing it.
  • ✅ Use Cloudflare Registrar — no annual markup, straightforward management, and includes free WHOIS privacy.
Don'ts
  • ❌ Don't settle for .net or .co because the .com is taken. Change the name.
  • ❌ Don't use a hyphenated domain to work around .com availability. Hyphens are forgettable and look untrustworthy.
  • ❌ Don't register through GoDaddy or Namecheap without comparing the renewal price. Most registrars offer low first-year prices and spike on renewal.
  • ❌ Don't ignore domain history. If you're buying a used domain, check it in a backlink tool first — some come with spammy link profiles that can hurt your SEO from day one.
