Implementation overview
Improve internal linking to enhance authority and navigation
Internal linking is probably the most underused SEO lever on any Webflow site. It's free, it takes maybe an hour per month, and it directly tells Google which pages you consider important.
Every internal link is a vote. A page that receives 20 internal links from across your site is signaling to Google that it matters. A page with zero internal links is essentially invisible — Google may crawl it, but it won't treat it as important, no matter how good the content is.
The monthly internal linking review has two sides.
First, identify your most important pages and make sure they're getting links. Your homepage, key landing pages, and any page you're actively trying to rank should have multiple internal links pointing at them from relevant content. Use descriptive anchor text that matches the keyword you're targeting — not "click here," but something like "Webflow image optimization guide."
Second, look for orphan pages — pages that exist but have no internal links pointing to them. In Webflow, these are easy to accidentally create. Every time you publish a new CMS item, check whether existing pages link to it. A page with no inbound internal links is harder to rank and harder to discover.
How to find the gaps. Use Screaming Frog or the Internal Links report in Ahrefs. Sort pages by number of inbound internal links. Pages with one or two links are your targets. For each one, find 3-5 relevant pages elsewhere on your site where a contextual link makes sense, and add it.
In Webflow, add internal links in the Rich Text editor in the CMS for collection items, or directly in the Designer for static pages.
One note on anchor text: vary it slightly. If 20 pages link to the same destination with the exact same anchor text, it looks unnatural. Use roughly the same intent, slightly different wording.
A well-linked site is easier to crawl, easier to understand, and tends to rank more pages. An hour per month is enough to make real progress.
How to do it on Webflow?
- Review your site structure and ensure key pages are linked within relevant content.
- Use Webflow CMS Collections to dynamically link related articles.
